I've recently decided to take up aquariums again. It's been about two years sense my last sucessful tank, which I sold to a friend after moving. I've decided to start another aquarium. I'm planning on purchasing a 10 gallon tank within the next few days and I've started thinking about what kinds of fish I'd like to put in there once everything is good and cycled. Here's what I've been thinking.

1 Dwarf Gourami (male) - I really love these fish. I think they're gorgeous and quite hardy.
4 Fancy Guppies (probably male) - I'd only keep one gender, most likely male. I just can't take care of any fry.
2 Killifish (same gender) - I'm not sure about these. People have told me they wouldn't be good for the community I want, but I think they're really pretty. I read they only get to be two inches. Someone said I shouldn't purchase them because the get up to five. These aren't a must, I just would like to hear more opinions.

I'd like to have one more type of fish in there, but I'm not sure which kind would get along with the rest. I was thinking some kind of tetra, but I don't want to have to make room for a big school of them and have to have less of other fish, like my guppies. Please let me know what you think.

dwarf gourami may pick on the guppys, so may be best to avoid one or other. Some killies may be ok, others will not. Big C, one of the mods, would be best to contact about them, as he is into his killies :good: Pygmy corries are a posibility for the bottom, a group of six would be doable once the tank has matured.

I run the system with 1/2 of you planned fish for the first 6 months to let things settle, then add the rest. It is quite a heay stocking, but you have past experience and thus should be able to handle it ok :good:

Best of luck with it

Hmm. That's interesting. I've had two Dwarf Gouramies (at different times) with three guppies and they never picked on them. Maybe I just got lucky with the Gouramies I had before. Do you think it would be okay to try it, keep an eye on them and see how they get along for a little while?

Do you think Lyretail killifish would be okay (same gendered)? I've never kept killifish before.

A lot depends on the personailities of the goruami. It may be doable. but at your own risk. You caould try it and keep an eye on things. Agression as you will know is quite obvious.

I belive "Lyretail killifish" could apply to many different types of killie. Please get a latain name for us, such as Aphosemium Gardeneri, so that we know the exact species.

All the best

A Blue Lyretail, Fundulopanchax gardneri or maybe a Clown Killifish, Pseudepiplatys annulatus. I know those are smaller, which might be better for my tank.

I belive the panchax would be OK, but would ask arround to be sure. I'm not formiliar with the other.

All the best

just as a second voice on the dwarf gourami, it does depend on the personality of the gourami, ive heard stories of evil ones, ones that stand upto 12 inch fish even, but mine was an angel, (may he rip), stood his ground, but nvr made trouble.

great fish, imo worth the risk.
