oh I should add the fish are only in the betta hex so I can take decent pics of them, they live in big nice filtered tanks that are too well planted to take good pics.

im pretty sure thats a male crowntail plakat. looks like it has a beard when it flares but hard to say without a head on shot.

Definitely looks like a beard to me. But the body suggests a female, especially the belly, looks very eggy. In short I'm leaning toward a male, but I can't be sure.

I've had males with big bellies like that, that fish is giving very mixed messages

But based on what I've seen with bolshy females I'd go for that being an awkward female who needs a good man to sort her out :shifty:

But whatever she is sure pretty

The head has a male look to it, but it doesn't have a large beard. And I think I see an ovi spot in the first picture.

I dunno though... looks like it could be a male that just ate too much... the face area really doesn't look female to me, but then the beard doesn't look that big and it looks like there MIGHT be an ovi spot.

males get ovi spots too remember, my male odin (a fully grown VT male) still has his

Yeh, umm, looks like both! The aggression you state could be either?
I would err on the side of caution. It could be a very young male who hasn't fully developed his flare yet.

We sort of confirmed a couple of our dodgy ones by putting them in a breeding net next to the girls. We thought they were males and sure enough they both built bubble nests. This is by no means a foolproof method though.

Cheers

I am 99% positive its a boy, because last night when I saw him and took the pictures hes little beard looked bigger then I could get a good pic of.

azul feeds her fish pretty good, thats why he seems to have a big girly belly, I think he is just very very young and hasnt fully developed yet, he is only about the size of a 2 month old really.

I would go for very young Male CT, but that would only by my guess. I think its going to be a case of wait and see

well I uploaded some more pics off for azul, the best face shot I could pick out of the bunch.
