Two photos here, one is a three spot gourami and another one is supposed to be a Trichopodus trichopterus as well, but its mouth looks different from a typical 3 spot.

Would you say they’re the same species?

Both are the same species, Trichopodus trichopterus. Common names include Blue Gourami, Gold Gourami, Opaline Gourami, Cosby Gourami, Marbled Gourami, Three-Spot Gourami. In spite of any differences in appearance/pattern/colour, they are all variants of the one species.

This is the most territorially aggressive of pretty much all the small to medium sized gourami species. Males are very territorial depending upon the individual temperament, and even females have been known to suddenly go after every fish in the tank.

if pearl gouramis are also in this species, why are they so much more peaceful?

They are semi aggressive at this stage, only occasionally going after other gouramis.

Yes, that’s what it is, a gold gourami. What threw me is the mouth (post 1, 2nd photo) which looks like a betta’s mouth rather than a gourami’s.

We are all used to seeing guppies or platies in different colours developed by selective breeding. It's the same with 3 spot gouramis, Trichopodus trichopterus, and the different colours have been given different names, as listed by Byron.

Pearl Gourami is T. leerii.
As Ichthys pointed out, pearl gouramis are a different species.
