While there are exceptions the larger the fish the longer they live.

For example : 24in Koi may live to be 20 or more years old, while a oscar that can get to 16in will live about 10 years,a 4in gourami can live about 4years, and a guppie that is 1in long wont live much longer then a year and a half.

If you look up the fish's profile on fishprofiles.com many have their life expectancy listed. I think some of the 'best buys' so to speak are neons and cardinals - they last between 7 and 10 years I think, whilst mollies and guppies are 1 year and swordtails up to 3.

You can't really put a number on a fish's life expectancy, (Nor can you with a human's) but it does depend on the fish :) Catfish, larger gouramis, and cichlids are generally pretty long lived, koi and goldfish can live for a very long time too :) IME tetras, danios and livebearers only last about 2 years.

It depends on how well you take care of the fish though, a site may say that a fish will live to be 5 y/o, but under extremely good care by a dedicated owner, that fish could have twice the life expectancy :)

Don't worry about how long your fish should live, try to wonder how long you can get them to live under your care ;)

Very good advice. Make it a point to prove the experts wrong.
