I have three new platys and I would like, out of curiosity, to know which varieties they are. Looking at pics I found on here, I think one is a painted platy and one is a sunset fire wag (does that sound right?) but I'm not sure about the third.

She is basically silvery blue, except for the last third/quarter of her body and her tail which are orange.

It would be very useful if there were a list of varieties somewhere to help ignoramuses like me

The orange one with black spots could be a Mickey Mouse Platy crossed with a Orange Platy.
The orange with a black tail I don't know but I had some.
Dunno about the silver one but i've seen them before.

I don't know of a full list, but I'll list the ones I know.
Orange with black spots - I have that, and they're calling it red dalmatian. In platies it's either red or yellow, dunno why.
Orange with black tail - either red wagtail, yellow wagtail or sunset wagtail. Probably a sunset. I had one but she died. :(
The marking where the front and back of the fish are different colours is called tuxedo or panda. Generally the tuxedo is if it's black and comes up almost to the head like my Ranger.

For Platies, there are generally not any shape variations other than Dwarf Platies. I have only seen these in PetSmart, and I do truly believe they are smaller in size at full length. They end up looking more round than normal Platies and smaller all around.

As for colors, there are tons.
Standard Orange
Blue (tend to look white most of the time)
Sunset Platy. An orage to yellow fade along the length of the body
Mickey Mouse. Has three dark circles that look like the Mickey Mouse symbol. Come in all sorts of colors.
Wag. Black tails. Assortment of other colors up front.
Bleeding Heart. These I've never seen in person. They are white with a translucent pink color.

There are the basic ones I run across regularly, but there are more, less common ones.

i have a pair of dwarf platys and yes, they are shorter and rounder than 'regular' platys. mine were named "red coral platys", but i believe that has more to do with their vibrant red colour than their size. they are awfully adorable! they seem to be very robust and hardy.

OK, so Flame is a red dalmation. Francesca is a sunset wag. Still not sure on Fiona though, think she might be a neon blue painted platy (from the link given by The Wolf).

Thanks for your help everyone!
