I've read that say you keep different sized discus together the larger ones release pheromone's which stunt the other fish, but then other people say its down to the smaller ones being out competed for food, just wanna know if theres any truth in this? possibly planning on dividing a 4 foot tank for different batches of discus fry in the future (hopefully :look: ) rather than having to have separate tanks for the different batches of fish. Then when they are big enough move them up to a larger tank to get grown on for selling once they out grow their space in the divided tank.

thanks

Happens with all Cichlids when you are growing them out.

for example I once had 12 Rotkeil Severums at 1" growing out in a 100g to themselves, months later i had a dominate 6" Rotkeil and the rest where under 3".

so they do release Pheromones? so dividing a tank for different batches aint a good idea?

They don't secrete pheromones, they do however secrete hormones which stunt growth, regular water changes combat this.

ah so i got my words mixed up :p but ok if w/cs combat it that aint a prob would be doing dailys anyway

cheers

doing daily watershanges will prevent the hormone from building up, so in that case you can keep large and small fish in the same body of water without stunting
