I got up today to cloudy water. Ammonia alert wasnt showing presence of ammonia and recent water tests had been zero for ammonia and nitrite, 5-10 for nitrate pH 7.6. I set up the tank about a month ago with a mature filter from another tank and kept testing the water and have had no problems. All existing stock were transferred across. The substrate is sand, there is bogwood and lots of plants which are growing well. A week ago I set up yeast based CO2 with Nutrafin kit. Yesterday I changed it. Today I noticed a couple of inches of cloudy water in CO2 tube and wondered if there had been an overflow and this had caused the cloudiness. I also did a 25% water change yesterday and added new bogwood and plants, rinsed all filter wool and some of the filter sponge. I didnt rinse the bio balls or the ceramics. Yesterday I also added a few fish from my quarantine tank. I am going away tomorrow and want them all in one tank.

When I found the cloudiness this morning, I immediately disconnected the CO2, did 50% water change, and added an extra airline. All fish are now fine. Initially prior to the 50% water change they were mostly at the top except the corys and bristlenose. Now just the guppies are near the surface as you would expect, and the other fish are behaving normally. The cloudiness remains. Yesterday I used a filter aid by API (cant find name) as the water was a little bit cloudy after the water change but nothing like it is now.

As I am going away tomorrow for a week and leaving the tank on autofeeder, is there anything else I can do? My daughter will be in the house but is fairly useless with fish, hence the autofeeder. She will be able to look at the tank and tell me if anything is dead though!

Just had another thought. I gave the bristlenose some mango last night, took it out this morning. I think that might have caused the white bits which are floating about. Would this be enough to cause all the cloudiness though?

I am going to run a few water tests. Again. I am in a bit of a panic!

Well Im a bit gutted no one replied. But I sorted it myself and tank is now clear. No fishy losses!
