Is She Pregnant

Hello I have noticed that my female platty is slightly fat.A male has been sticking closely to her and following. Is it that she is chubby or is she pregnant, if she is pregnant how long until i should move her to a breeding trap.

Have a look in the livebearer forum - that's where the experts are. She does look a bit chubby. If she's pregnant rather than just fat - she should develop a gravid (black) spot near her anal fin. If there's a male in the tank - then it's 99.9% likely that she's pregnant! Takes 3 - 4 weeks to have them - I believe - but check with the experts.

Breeding traps aren't a good idea for the pregnant girls - they don't like them. You're better off having lots of plants for the babies to hide in and then, as soon as you notice them, transfer them to the breeding trap. I wouldn't worry too much about losing a few - she's going to have some more in another 3 - 4 weeks

female platties do tend to get on the fat side on a daily basis, ive got 4 females that go up and down all the time, not all platties have the dark gravid spot when expecting it depends on the actual fish, it usually 3.5 -4weeks till they drop their fry, yur platy will remain pregnant for sometime and continue to give birth on a regular basis, this is because they store sperm over a period that enables them to become pregnant as soon as giving birth
