Is sand better than gravel?

does it do any thing to the water?

I think it depends on the fish and set up. Sand has it's advantages over gravel and shouldn't alter the water at all unless it's marine sand or improperly cleaned sand.

about the sand and gravel. i have 2 tanks one with gravel and the other with sand.... i find sand very neat but you can see poop, very easy if you are payin attention to the bottom of te tank unless you have brownish sand, also corys love sand its easier on theyr "mustaches" (is that how u call their lil things on their mouths?) anyway, in my opinion gravel is easier to clean also with gravel you can have an under gravel filter and with sand you can't, i cant tell you a lot about them cuz im really new on sand, but one thing's for sure u need to rinse it veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery very well (sand) and trustme.... dont mix it with gravel unless it matches color (sand+gravel) im in the middle of a fight right now.... tryin to get rid of the white gravel that i mixed with very black sand hopefully somebody will show up and give you more useful info like Bol, Teelie, or Sky042 or freshmike , cutechic Sorrell Arashi and more i luv those ppl super super helpful

i have sand..and my fish seem to enjoy it more than the gravel. its fun to watch my cichlids suck up sand in their mouths and dump it..
