A lot of people on here say that if you have a quarantine or Fry tank which you dont always use, you can run the filter in another tank to keep if cycled.

So that tank will be running two filters, and when you have fry or need a quarantine tank, you set it up and add the cycled filter in.

But, wont the tank that you had 2 filters running in, now rely on 2 filters. So removing one is like removing half the bacteria (depending on how similarly sized the two filters are)

I ask this, as i have a guppy tank, and guppy fry tank. The fry tank isnt always set up. and when its not i have the filter running in my guppy tank. Both have the exact same filter (small internal, power driven sponge).

So long as your tank has gravel/plants, deco, etc, there will be more than enough bacteria on those as well. There might be a tiny ammonia spike, but nothing too serious, i would believe.

P.T.

The mature filter, having mature bacteria base, catches up quickly. I have done this on many occasions.

bacteria multiply so quickly it doesnt really matter
