If I just put the driftwood in my aquarium is the tannins and stuff bad for the water? If I just change the water frequently will the wood sink over time?

Tannis are fine in the water, some fish actually like them. :)

Some driftwood naturally floats, so you may have to weigh it down for a while.

Can you be more specific, please?

Are you just putting a piece of driftwood in the tank that you have found outside or is it untreated but from a shop?

I don't know that I'd fully recommend putting something in that you've found without knowing exactly what type of wood it is and treating it correctly. If it's just from a shop, then it should be fine to put in after you pour some boiling water over it a couple of times just to be sure.

The tannins are normally fine but as they seep more and more into the water they'll not only reduce the pH (tannic acid) but also your water will turn a tea colour and appear murky. Some people like that and some don't. Eventually the release of tannins will reduce and stop altogether.

I did find them outside, at lake. I cleaned them with high-pressure water and then poured boiling water over them.
