I have recently got 5 black neon tetras.. When i got them 1 was noticeably bigger than the others but now its belly has really grown and is quite uneven and looks lumpy.. is it able to lay its eggs or has it got some kind of disease? trying to learn more about them but am still needing a book so cant find out about diseases etc! help! x

it could be neon tetra disease, where the tetra gets a swollen belly, then loses its colour and finally cant swim well.
try google though it may have more info on it.

Do you have any neon tetra in the tank.
What is your ph.
Lumpy belly can be a sign of ntd, but I wouldn't jump to say it was, as usually the fish goes pale like bleached out first.

Its hard to say without seeing it. It could be dropsy or something else or it could be that it is holding egg's.

Is it still swimming around actively (like the other fish) and eating normally?
Are the scales sticking out at odd angles or are they still quite smooth looking?
What are the ammonia and Nitrite levels?
What is its colour like? (same as normal or loking slightly faded?)

Some tetras when they are holding eggs can look quite "lumpy", the slimmer bodied tetras dont normally show quite as much as the larger bodied ones but they can do.

Just a quick note to say I have diamond headed tetras (a kind of morph of neon tetras) and a couple of mine had odd shaped bellies, I did wonder whether it was normal but just left them to see.. that was almost 2 months ago, nothing ever happened and they are all fine and well (with normal shaped bellies) so figure it's just the shape of their belly or eggs. I don't know really but i'd suggest you just leave them unless it's very bloated or you notice any other signs!
