My Biorb is fishless cycling at the moment and I've noticed a lot of white stuff floating around when I disturb the water. Is this some kind of mould? I'm right at the beginning I don't have to start again, do I?
I had exactly the same thing when I started my community tank. I think it's some type of algea, and the fish love eating it when you first introduce them. Don't worry about it, it will not do any harm, it's just unsightly. If the sight of this stuff bothers you, simply scrape it off with a scouring pad (type with a sponge on the back. The metal type souring pads will mark the glass)

I had it in my new set up too, it goes away of its own accord. I did a few water changes and cleaned the substrate and any ornaments. I havent had it since so dont worry about it too much. If you are fishless cycling i would wait untill the tank has cycled, then you have to do a large water change before adding any fish anyway so it would be a good idea to do it then. I know it doesnt look very good but it will go. HTH. GRJ
