I have a Juwel Rio 180 which is approx 50 US gallons. My tap water is very hard and alkaline with a very high kH. My local pet shop says the tap water conditions in my area are perfect for malawi chilchids.

Is he right? and is my tank big enough for malawi's?
Is the standard rio 180 pump/filter good enough?
Are the water conditions ok?

If so - could you recommend how many of each species and sex i could keep? whats a good mix?

cheers!

Both the water parameters and the tank size would be just fine for many species of malawi cichlids. Make sure you do plenty of research on compatibility before you get them, as aggression and dietary incompatibilities are common.

Do you know what fish you're interested in?

As far as filtration, if you're thinking of mbuna, you might consider additional filtration.
