Take a look at some of the threads and articles here; http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/422940-really-useful-information-about-common-livebearers/

They should answer most of your questions

Platies are pregnant for about 1 month. you will notice her getting bigger, rounder, like she is going to pop. When they are about to have their babies they 'square off' This is when her belly starts to look a little more square, than round.

If your female platy is a light colour you can sometimes see the fry developing, you can see their eyes. like this picture.

When a platy squares off it looks like this (she is also giving birth) -

But notice how the bottom of her stomach is flatter? i'm not sure weather this happens with all platys though.

Do you have any photos of your platy you could post here?

Platy's get pregnant very easily, so more than likely yes your platy is pregnant. Females have more rounded off bottom fins and males have thinner, longer bottom fins. Generally you will need 2 females for every 1 male. When your female is ready to give birth it is better to seperate her in a mesh breeding net unless your tank is heavily planted. If you choose to separate the fry, you can feed them a variety of food. My favorite is yolk from a slightly boiled chicken egg mixed with water and fed to this fry from a dropper. Best of luck!
