I got three platys on monday, they're my very first fishand they're doing great so far. I'm not sure which are male and which are female. I was told by the lfs person that she thought that they were all female, but i dont trust any lfs that says 'I think'.I'm researching and I havent yet seen any proof of a modified fin I'l keep looking though. :shifty:

one of them seems to have an inflated stomach and a very slight dark patch behind the inflation. I have read that these are signs that it is pregnant but I'm not sure yet. Any info on the subject at all would be helpful. I wasn't planning on trying to save the fry, I figured it would be ok cos I can't handle all those tiny fry, even if i do give them to the petshop when they're big enough. Thanks for any advise! :good:

sexing any live bearer is very easy, all you need to do is look at the fins underneeth the platy, first on the left)

This is what a female fins looks like:

This is what the male fins looks like:

This is the same for the guppy and swordtail. Dont know about the rest cuz i havnt kept them.

As for pregnant. If the female is fat, just past the rib cage and you see little black dots, they are the unborn fry. I've never known when the fish decide to breed, but a good indication is once you see the dots, you know that its close.

Hope this helps :)

***EDIT***

By the way, if you do want to keep the fry, i suggest buying a breeding trap. Theres a few going for £3.20 which float in the water on e-bay! Thats a cracking deal! (i couldnt resist buying one) What you do is set up the breeding trap using the instructions, put it in your existing tank and then transfer the pregnant female on its own. The male has already done its job so it plays no part in fry-birth except for looking after its stomache.

I got the photo off www.timstropicals.com
