hello

i have a question as to a fish of mine, it was sold to me as an "electric blue jack dempsy" but it does'nt look like the pics of reg JDs so is it a hydrid or what and are its needs the same as a reg JD? he seems to have a great tempermint. although not with small fish but a certain badass cherry barb that takes not #### from anyone in the tank.

EBJD's are a genetic mutation that naturally occurs. To breed them, a couple generations of work needs to be done to work out part of a spawn that will be true EBJD's. They typically will have a better tempermant than regualr JD's, but they also have a greater probability in illness. The EBJD will have an "electric blue" coloration instead of the typical purple to dark brown background with purple and green spots. So in essence, they cost more because they are work to breed, but they are some very beautiful fish.

I wouldn't worry about the JD, I would worry for the barb when one day he crosses the line the JD shows him that he isn't much of a bada$$ at all.

They have all the same requirements as a normal JD

The EBJD is one of my favorite fish. Hard to keep til they reach about 4 inches but totally worth it. Great personality and absolutely gorgeous.

Ox5477 pretty much nailed it with what he told you but i would like to add one thing. Keep your water pristine. They need to have good water parameters. pH isn't as important as long as it's steady but Amm and NitrIte have to be at 0. Also you might want to think about getting a UV sterilizer. EBJD's get sick really easily until they mature but after that they're almost as tough as a reg JD

Good luck
