I had 2 gourami fish (pretty sure they were both males) and one recently died. The other has since become lethargic and is not eating. Is he lonely and depressed?
I would say the other fish is affected but whether it is lonely or not, I wouldn't be able to say. I would take a look at the health of the tank if you don't know why the first gourami died some underlying issue might have caused the first ones death and the current one is still dealing with the issue.
I agree that you should determine the reason for the first ones death and ensure it isn't bringing down your other. Considering they're male gouramis, I don't know how likely it is that he misses the other one, but maybe he's less stimulated now?
Thank you. I have been keeping an eye on the health of the tank. Nitrogen levels were high, but seem to slowly be getting under control. I hope to be able to keep this guy. We’ve had them for 2 years now and are so much fun to watch.
Different gourami species coexist differently. But two males will never like each other. As long as he's not suffering from a disease that killed his companion (is it good to hope he was the killer???) he'll be happier.
I don’t think the other was the killer. They had co-existed for 2 years. I think the levels of aquarium got out of control and he couldn’t handle it. Got all but nitrates back under control, and those are coming down. Hopeful “Mango” improves and becomes his lively self again soon.
Thanks everyone for the feedback.
