IS MY FISH CHOKING?!?! I don't usualy use this forum but for whatever reason mine isn't working. I was giving my shrimp algae wafers and as usualy my fish were being greedy, and I'm not 100% sure but I think I saw on my my swordtails swallowed a huge peice of algae wafer, her stomach is huge now! It looks like she is about to burst. And she looks like she is trying to spit it out but can't. HELP! Is there anything I can do for her!!?!?!?!?!? I just checked her again, breathing is laboured and she appears shakey.

I think she is past the state of emergency... Or maybe it's just begun? She doesn't appear to be choking any more but I do know that agae wafers absorb the water and get huge. So I fed some green peas to help it pass... Not to sure if that was the right thing to do or not... Anyone have any input?

i think that was kinda a bad move..i know peas are good to help it pass but the last thing you want to do is feed her more food! i dont think there is anything you can do other than wait...if i were you i wouldnt feed her for the next couple of days.

I don't think she ate any of the peas. My other fish enjoyed the extra snack though do you know of a way I can be sure she won't eat when I feed my other fish, or should I just hold off on feeding them all together? Thank you for your reply I was afraid I wouldn't get an answer. (I only cut up one pea if that helps?)

it she is not eating then you should hospitilise her. fast the other fish for a day or two (this will help biological filtration, but its not nessisary).
in the hospital tank it should be bare with no food sorce (the last thing you want is her to eat more when she got food stuck) and a few pots for hidding places, melafix will help prevent infection caused by stress.
she should be okay because i had a Colombian Tetra who had a pea stuck in his mouth for a week, (long story short he spat it up, eventualy....) and another who decided to eat a snale, both ended up fine with some fasting, if she has it stuck in her mouth then you could try (if you can catch her) getting some sterilised twezers, removing her from the tank puting her in some towels dipped in tank water, and try removing it.
but fishh are extrodinary creatures, catfish have eaten suction cups and spat them out weeks - even months down the line.
as long as her digestion is workingg fine (is she still pooing?) then i think she will spit it up.

good luck, shang hi :good:

Yes, lol she was pooping as it was happening/ a short time after. :S Oh my your fish are nuts! Hah thanks for the advice. I don't have a hospital tank at the moment, the only other tank I have is 1.0 nitrites and that wouldn't help her case at all. She seems to be doing fine, and her belly doesn't appear so swollen. And I'm pretty sure she got it down. So no need for the tweezer approach, But thanks I'll keep that in mind in case it was to happen again. And I'm sure it will as they are all very greedy girls.
