Hey, I just bought my filter for my ten gallon tank and it is a kind that hangs on the side of the tank and it sucks up water then from the surface of the water go's back down. I am not sure if this is a good one for cleaning and for my fishes. I only have a bulgy eye black fish and a orange mickey tailed platy. I don't know what other fish to get..... I need serious help. i would like to get a pair of fish that could have babies but I don't know if my filter is good or not. Please help.

That black fish is a black moor. these fish need to live at cold temperatures, so you should return it.

As for the filter, the purpose of these filters is mechanical filtration, or removing pick floating particles. They also have small amounts of biological and (if you have carbon) chemical filtration. If you got a kit, then that filter should work. Make sure the surface is agitated enough because it helps release CO2 from the water and adds O2.

The filter should be ok for at least 2 more fish minus the black moor. It's best to keep livebearers in a ratio of 1 male to 2 females to reduce the stress on the females. Research before buying and adding fish when breeding.

Also, you could add an African Dwarf Frog (ADF) or ghost shrimp to the tank once you cycle the tank (go to the beginners section and ask about the nitrogen cycle) and you are prepared to maintain the tank and feed these guys.
