I wont be having a sump with the tank I am planning, I thought I would be ok without, but now, thinking ahead to things like phosphate removal etc, am wondering how I will tackle this?

Could I run one of my old freshwater filters in the marine tank? With layers sponge & rowaphos (in bag)? I was thinking it could help remove debris from tank & keep the water cleaner & remove the phosphates aswell. There will also be some (but not great) water flow from the outlet too.

Is this a really stupid idea? It will be a while before I need to do it, but I am selling lots of my old equipment & I will hold onto one of my filters if it could be used in this way?

Or are there any other ways of removing phosphates when you dont have a sump?

Its not an uncommon thing to do. The actual filter itself if pretty redundant if you have live rock in your tank, so is not worth running for that reason. Removing the filter sponges and using the filter as a fluidized reactor for phosban and activated carbon is definitely a benefit.

Good to see you are thinking ahead and planning things out. It help you avoid problems and will save you many headaches later on :good:

Thats great thank you :good: I will have to pick your brains again when I am ready to set up to see how much of everything to put in there.

You're welcome. Just don't pick too many. I don't have much left lol :p

Definitely agree with the above. I would put a spray bar on the output as well and have it right at the waters surface to increase the surface movement. helps to keep the CO2/O2 stable (which in turns helps keep the PH stable).
