i have mixed black gravel but very small gravel with white sand and i dont really like it anymore.

can anyone think of a way of seperating them. i have layed it out to dry. i was thinking in water the black will sink quicker because it is larger and heavier, i could try and get the sand out still floating the the water but i think that will take ages.

anyone got any ideas?

cheers

Try a fish net with wide holes, not the fine mesh type. I use this to keep the MTS population in my sand at acceptable levels. The sand falls through the net, the snails (in your case gravel) won't.

Cyclone filter would work aswell there are million and one eyes to sperate two different sized particles

the black gravel is basically sand, that is the black sand in the pic below. the white sand is normal beacsh sand.

also you cant use sand from a beach can you, even if you boil it?

cheers

its illegal to remove sad and stone from beaches and i wouldnt use it anyway. just ditch the lot and redo it.

well just in case you were wondering i did it.

just poured in water then pured it out into another bucket and the lighter sand went with it. took a while but i got most of the sand back

why do you want to keep the sand. it is soo cheap. 15Kgs for £5

depends if you have enough for the next set up, plus old sand is horrible and discoloured underneath.

To the OP - I have a bonsai sieve set (google it) used for grading bonsai soils but it fits this type of job perfectly - bit bonkers purchasing for one off use but depending on sand grade you could get similar results from a large kitchen sieve.

/ Ignore looks like you solved it - oops
