We have a planted tank with 9 neons, 2 gouramis & 1 Platy.

We know the Platy is a female as it's appeared pregnant and had some fry about 3 months ago.
We didn't have fry cage for them back then and sadly, they were all eaten by the Gouramis.

Now 3 months later, there are more fry (they are so cute),
we have 6 of them and I can't figure out how this Platy keeps having babies without a male.
First time we thought we got her pregnant from the fish store but now...we are baffled.

I can't find anything on the net talking about this...does anyone know if they need males to be fertilized?

We are just assuming they are platy babies as they are orange/clear with black fins and the Platy is very fat.

Any insight anyone can provide would be great.

Yes, platties do need males to become pregnant, but they are able to store sperm for I think up to 8 months. Most likely the platy was pregnant when you bought her and has stored sperm in order to have multiple litters of fry.

Thanks! We have actually caught 2 and put them in the breeding pod/tank and there are 3 more hiding in the plants that have successfully dodged the Gouramis for 5 days now. I want to catch the other 3 but my man won't let me for fear of disrupting his plants! The Platy Mama still looks pregnant, so hopefully we will have more.
Thanks again for your quick response. This is an awesome forum, glad I found it!
