Hi, I have a tank with several mollies, platies, and an algae eater. the thing is i dont really have any algae in the aquarium.
The guy at the pet store said it would be a good idea to get it, but im not really sure he was right. can an algae eater be underfed or die from not having any algae in the tank???
Thanks In Advance For Any Replies

If your worried throw an alge tab in there and see if he goes after it.

yep, I bought my algea discs from Wal-Mart, and if they're left alone they get all mushy and might cloud up the water, so remove them if they're not being eaten.

You can also feed him veggies- courgette, lettuce, spinach, sprouts, peas (ordinary frozen, lightly boiled, shell removed). This is also good for the platies and mollies, who need a fairly high content of vegetable matter in their diet (mollies in particular). If you pour boiling water over the lettuce etc, the nasty chemicals should wash off.

Btw what kind of an algae eater is he? If the ordinary Chinese algae eater, you will need to watch him as he matures, as they tend to get quite aggressive.
