hey people i am new to the world of fish , i have a 15 gallon tank with

2 black mollies
5 zebra danios
3 khuli loach
1 golden sucking loach
2 lamp eye tetra

ive always asked at the fish shop if these fish are cool together in my smallish tank and the answer is always yes ,but they also told me the danios were happy little fish ive since found out they are feisty little sh*t bags so am now wondering did they tell me pork pies bout the rest? i aim to get a siamese fighter when the tank is a bit more mature and im a bit more learned in the world of fish keeping. i am worried about overstocking it or having them outgrow the tank . do you think i could get anymore fish if so what? a little advice would be cool as you guys seem to know what ur going on about cheers :good:

Definitely don't get a siamese to go in that tank, they're better off alone or with shrimp, snail or frogs. I'd also say that tank is full as well.
They reckon 1cm of fish per litre of water is a good guide. Just had a look at the index and Khuli loaches get to 4-5" so I'd say definitely overstocked and they will need a bigger tank.

i'm not going to argue if youre overstocked or not, but i wouldnt put a siamese figher in with danios, they are very nippy fish.

but putting one in without danios is ok. a siamese fighter can live happily in a community tank

how liong has the tank been set up?
depending on the answer to that question id say get 3 more kulhis...they like to be in big groups and have very little bioload. and if the 3 you currently have are shy, it may entice them to come out and play more (they are little characters). just make sure you have hidey holes for them around the tank. a fighter is a no im afraid.
cheers

You're about fully stocked with what you have, and while I have heard of successes with siamese fighters in community tanks, I wouldn't recommend it myself. I've just looked up the lamp eye tetra, and these look like they grow to 4 inches too, once your fish get to adult size they're going to be quite large. Which of these fish have you got?

This one?

Lamp eye tetra

or this one?

Lamp eye killifish

The second one is a much smaller fish

(Sorry for not putting the pictures in the post, coudn't get the img tag to work)

the guide of 1" of fish to a gallon or 1cm of fish to a litre is a VERY rough guide that applies to smaller (under 3") fish only really.

they are killfish

Okay first of all Kuhlis are quite long but bear in mind they are also thin. This is why the inch-per-gallon rule is best regarded as a guideline. 3 or even 3 kuhlis in a 15 gallon should not be a problem at all. I would definitely suggest adding 3 extra kuhlis because they are a schooling species but they may not become any more outgoing because they are nocturnal.

The danios will be nippy unless you have them in a group of 6 or more. Unless kept in large groups, schooling fish feel too exposed and will try to school with fish of a different species to blend in. They treat the other fish just like danios, aka nipping and chasing them constantly. Throw a slow, large finned fish like a betta in there and it will be like throwing a hunk of meat into a pirahna infested river!

The tiger you have by the tail here is your golden sucking loach. I'm surprised no one else has touched on this. This species is better known as the infamous Chinese Algae Eater and will definitely outgrow your tank. At maturity they reach about 12 inches in length and are real grouches. Unless you would consider getting a 100g, I would just take him back to the store. Not worth the trouble.

So yeah once you get rid of Mr. Golden Sucking Loach you will be at pretty much full capacity, give or take a few kuhlis. If the danios are acting too mental for you I would just take them back to the store and get a few more lampeyes.

And for the future, always remember all advice from a fish-store employee is 99% pork pies!

Good luck,
Kelly
