Well if you did it would knock your tank into a mini cycle, are you having all gravel or sand maybe use the old gravel or sand with it.

If you do remove the gravel the problem could come back again, do you over feed, have you an airstone, where is the tank placed like is it near direct sunlight, and have you got room in the tank for some algae eater.

I highly recommend a bristlenose plec or two. they cleared up my Massive hair algae problem in less than a week, and are now being supplemented with algae tabs. I put two in a 55 gal.
