OK,

Set up a new tank (first time ever) a month ago. I placed in the tank an artificial tree / log stump thing and some artificial 'grass'.

And guess what happens after I've placed everything in position & start filling the tank up with water?

Yep, you've guessed it... EVERYTHING STARTS TO FLOAT !!

Now, it is just me, or is making things designed to go IN water LIGHTER than water basically STUPID or am I missing something? like sticky tank glass or something more obvious than that :grr:

Glad I've got that off my chest! :fun:

Andy

well the water landing on them can create bubbles and it takes time for the bubble to come off and untill they do some types of decor will float,

but personaly i`d of gone with real wood and plants as its just more natural

Oh, and poxy fish stores who sell you anything to anyone without first pointing out BASIC but what could turn out to be very important information.

e.g.

Hello, I'd like some shrimp.

OK, thats 3 quid each please.

OR

Hello, I'd like some shrimp.

OK, thats 3 quid each please. by the way do you know they jump and you should keep the lid of your tank on, ensuring it fits properly

Glad I've got that off my chest as well!

@SPAM, hello & thanks for your response...

Points duly noted, but my decor is way lighter than water. Air bubbles or not, you caould use this stuff to save a drowning man - thay should have them tied to rails at quaysides in case of emergency!

Ideally so would I, but the advice from the LFS guy said to wait before planting because caring for the real stuff can be a bigger pain than caring for the fish.... and as I am just starting out I went for the low maintenance / zero porblem route

Andy

its noonsence if you just have some of the hardier plants its easy, then all you do is when you do your weekly tank maintanence pluck any dead leaves off the plants and your done,

or if its a stem plant then prune it down when it hits the wateers surface

Thanks again SPAM...

Can you be kind enough to suggest some of these 'hardier' plants I could possibly try.

BTW - I am not (nor will I ever be - a man has to know his limits after all) green fingered. My only repriese is that I don't have to water them :sly:

Andy

java fern, amazon sworn, anubias, horn wort or cabomba all do very well and are very easy to maintain, the java fern and anubia wil lgrow attached to rocks or bog wood, and can look very decorative,

all these plants will grow very easily with no extra light or fertilises,

having plants in the tank will also help to keep alge down as the planst will absorb the neutrients

Indeed!

The big yellow neon word SPAM kinda distracted me from BigIan.

(And no, I don't make a habit of speaking to cans of Spam).

Soz dude!

lmao, sorry had to laugh cheered me up from my currant fish disaster.
as for floating ornaments ive had a fair few too they do settle down but since i cant hold my own water let alone wait for the things to sink again i use the hollow mangrove roots they fill up with the water which keeps them in place and make fantastic hidyholes too boot.
Oh and dont go down the adding cute little froggies bit either unless your lid is secure and has no and i repeat NO exits as they will escape and you may find mummyfied bodies about months later under the tank or make great snacks for any resident moggie ........as did mine some months back.

Glad I cheered you up a bit!

Being the entrepreneurial type that I am, I have purchased a shed load of those floaty fish tank ornaments and some lackie-bands. I am now making a vertiable fortune flogging these items to kids at the local swimming baths for use as water wings - you don't have to blow them which is a great selling point.

I was going to call them 'Floating Logs (tm)', but a mate of mine pointed out the irony of this considering what they looked like & where they were being used should one come off someone's arm & start floating about in the swimming pool (as they invariably do)!

OT: I just know I'm gunna regret asking this, but what, exactly, is a 'rubberdoofa'?
