A few days ago, Hubby acquired 2 water dogs. We also got 2 algae eating shrimp (one died) an angel fish and 3 cichlids {please don't judge my tank mates... this isn't what the post is about, and nothing you say will change my mind. I've done my reserch, and taken into account the way the dogs were raised in the pet store and the way they are at home}.

Now, it seems they all have fin rot?? We noticed it yesterday in the water dogs. We thought maybe the cichlids were nipping, but the never bother each other. Then, I noticed that the angel fish and two of the cichlids also have ragged, decaying looking fins... I did a 20% (about) water change yesterday, and again today, and also put some Melafix in the tank. All the fish seem happy and otherwise healthy! They are actively swimming, eating and doing everything they seem to be supposed to be doing.

The house has been pretty hot, causing the tank temp to reach 85! It is now back down to about 75 and staying there. We got a higher power filter for the tank, and a bubble curtain to add some oxygen to the water. We will be getting some live plants tomorrow to try and help out.

I ask this because, all I've read on fin rot doesn't seem to be the same symptoms. There are no red streaks in the fins, nor white spots I can see. Just ragged fins... I think one of our cichlids brought it home...

Ragged fins could also be the result of fighting. Either way, Melafix is the only course of action I know to take. (That doesn't really mean much though, I'm a newbie.)

The fact that the 1st thing you did was defend your stocking speaks for itself IMO.

In a more helpfull manner can you get a pic of the fish will be very hard to help otherwise?
