Is It Cruel?

Someone suggested to hang a mirror on the tank for my Betta (Edward) to play a bit, but I did this and he got very agressive, puffed out and seemed very hyper. I didn't leave it there long, but I think this might be cruel to get him all flustered like that. Any thoughts?

its not cruel, its good exercise for them, but should only be used for about 5 min daily

my males live in divided tanks so can see each other alot, they tend to ignore each other most of the time

No this is not cruel at all, in some ways its good for them as it spurs them into being active. As lilfishie said though, don't do it for more than 5 mins a day else you could caused blown fins.
