Hi there,

last night when I was rearranging plants I noticed the driftwood had a fine lot of white stuff on it (i know stuff is not very technical explanation lol) it looks like mould but its not was wondering if it is algae and will it go away?

Regards Darren

I had this on my bogwood. I guess it's a form of fungus that forms when parts of the wood rot in the tank. It didn't last long in my case and no fish were harmed. I suppose you could manually remove it if you wish.

Thanks, I am not overly worried but wasn't sure if it was dangerous, however there are no fish in the tank anyway

It is a fungus, which is why I cure my mopani before I put it in the tank. It is harmless, but unsightly and smells pretty nasty.

hi there,

I baked my mopani in the sun for 3 weeks, soaked it for 4 weeks and the boiled it for 2 full days it should not be on there.....

I would take it out and scrub it.
I'm surprised the ungus survived 2 days of boiling!

It can be stubborn stuff. I had to cure mine for about 2 months. I had boiled it previously and it didn't work, so I just left it outside for two months, changing the water every week or so. Grew some great mosquito larva and little buggers for my fish. When I removed the wood and it didn't stink, nor did I see anything growing on it, I figured it was done.
