Well, I've been cycling my tank for a while now (Should be done in a week or so), and I accidentally added twice the normal amount of ammonia (raised it to 6ppm). The next morning almost all of my hair algae was dead or dying.

Does this usually happen? I'm not complaining, I was just hoping to keep it in there for my shrimp when I get them.

Could do, usually algae is caused by ammonia, but I don't know at what point the concentration becomes too much for the algae though. It's quite a powerful chemical used for cleaning after all.

There have been threads before about high level dosing of nitrate (localised in a syringe) killing BBA very quickly. Many tried it, some cried Eureka and some said it doesn't work. So for some people it did work including some very respected scapers.
