Ok well I recently got two new parakeets from a person who could not keep them anymore. They are about 3-4 years old. I have them in seperate cages. There wings are not clipped and they are not hand tamed. I was wondering if there was any way to tame them now? Or is it too late? Any other advice would really help
well you will never get them as tame as you would if hand rearing but they should get used to you over a period of time.they will probly be a bit wild for the first couple of weeks but then start to calm down as they get used to there surroundings.as for there wings not being clipped dont worrie the only time you may consider having there wings clipped is if your worried they may fly away when there out of there cage.may i ask what type of parakeets they are and what sex they are?
ok so after a few weeks should I take them out of the cage? or should I do it sooner? If i did take them out sooner I would be worried that they would fly away, theres almost no doubt in my mind that they would. Sure but what do you mean what type like color? if so one of them is blue and the other is yellow and green, and they are both females
i think there budgies that u have and are a great little birds.they should be fine in the same cage and yes after a few weeks when they are used to u and there surroundigs they can be let out if your comfortable letting them out, just make sure all doors and windows are closed and that u dont startle them.and also when u let them out be prepared for all the poo on things like door frames and curtain rails etc.were are they kept and how big are they just so i know they are budgies as i thought.
thats some thing i dont know i think most peoples budgies make they own way back to the cage other wise i dont know, im sure jessica13 and SirMinion will help u further.
Im actually trying to tame some little lovebirds at the moment and all is going well so far!
It will be possible to tame them as they're still young. The way i try to tame them is to spend about 20 minutes a few times a day just sitting quietly by the cage, maybe putting your hand in to get them used to seeing you around. Once they're ok with you doing that try offering them food. If possible find something that they particularly like (for my lovebirds im using apple). It may take a few days but they will eventually take it from you. The just keep feeding them by hand until you build up their trust enough to be able to pick them up without causing them too much stress. The worst thing to do is chase them around the cage as this will scare them and when you do catch them you'll probably end up with a nasty bite!!
It can take a LONG time to tame birds but if you just take your time and are very patient you will get there! I honestly would suggest clipping their wings. Im planning on clipping my birds wings when they're a bit older (they're still only babies) as it just makes them easier to tame as they will rely on you more to get them in and out of the cage and stuff like that. If you do clip them be sure to take them to an avian vet and dont attempt it yourself! You can do a lot of damage if you do it yourself and do it wrong!!
Good Luck with them! Anymore questions feel free to ask me on here or PM me and i'll try to answer them
this is the best budgie site i know of and you will probly learn a lot of things on here and it will answer all your questions.www.daves-forums.co.uk/bbc/
I just cut a little piece of apple and hold it out for them and sooner or later their curiousity gets the better of them and they have to come and see what i've got
Oooh, and about getting them back into their cages... How big is the one they're in at the moment? If its big enough for them to fly around a bit and exercise their wings i wouldn't suggest letting them out for a couple of weeks until they've tamed a bit. Some people may argue that but as, from what i can tell, you dont have much experience with birds you may end up upsetting them by chasing them around trying to catch them. Having their wings clipped would obviously mean they wouldnt be able to fly as far which would make catching them much easier. When they're tame you can just let the wing feathers grow out again and they'll be able to fly perfectly
