Is Ammonia Wee Or Poo?

Ammonia comes from both. Urine is almost pure ammonia but waste breaks down into ammonia just like any other dorm of decaying biological substance.

Ammonia is neither (because only ammonia is ammonia). But urine contains almost pure ammonia ;)

Actually 80% of ammonia created by fish is caused by resperation through the gills.
Only the remaining 20% is from faeces and urine.

interesting
would you happen to know the chemical equation behind this by any chance?

good to know :)
although different fish species would show different percentages i guess....

I really didn't know that

If true, this is very interesting.

It may mean that a fish that produces most poo is not the one that produces the most ammonia...

Now, if you have two fishes of the same size, do they have equally active gills? Is it true that fast moving fish (think danios) would produce more ammonia, while a slow, even large one (think plecos), would not?

Lol... trust SirMinion to say something like that  Very interesting though. Might I ask if you know... how?

I think that the ammonia release is due to aerobic respiration of proteins.

Before a protein can be used as the substrate for aerobic repiration, it it first broken down to amino acids. These amino acids then undergo deamination, with the lost amino group turning into ammonia. The resulting keto acid can enter glycolysis or the Krebs cycle (be used in aerobic respiration).

I suppose that the ammonia then simply diffuses out of the blood into the water across the gills.

I think this is the equation you are looking for VYES 9???????????

That's a shame - the formula isn't displaying correctly and the first bit just looks like someone sneezing
COOH COOH COOH
 but uhm interesting.

I guess so! :)

where's the O2 in there though?
It displays much better if you paste it in notepad or soemthing, now i can see clearly :)

thanks fore the info!!!

So the answer is yes, but no, both but maybe, and neither. That clears it up for you. Bet your glad you asked.!!!!!
