Is Activated Carbon Of Any Use ?

I was reading an old topic regarding the use of salt in fw aquaria where one of the comments by a very respected marine zoologist went something like "he also sells carbon which is probably less useful" (than salt)
Can anyone suggest any further reading regarding the use of a c in fishkeeping or put a link up to a constructive topic within this forum ?

Unfortunately, one of the best articles I have read on how activated carbon works and why is on the Algone site. The company sells tank supplies including carbon. I am not linking to this piece because I endorse the company nor any of its products but because of the article.

Here is my personal feeling re carbon uses in fw tanks in a nutshell: Only use it for specific purposes- ie removal of specific things from the water: tanins, medications, organic pollutants etc. Carbon does not need to be run 100% of the time unless there is something in your tap water that necessitates this.
