Hello,
I'm Keith and I'm new here, but not too new to the hobby. When I was in my teens I had a small 10 gallon tank set up and I kept all kinds of fresh water tropical fish, but when I went to college I wasn't able to keep fish anymore. (Don't worry, I knew in high school that I had to stop buying fish so that by time I went to college I wouldn't have many more left. Peacefully and naturally the last one floated to the top while I was a freshman). Then in November 2004 I bought another aquarium and I've been going strong since.
Right now I have a 33 gallon typical aquarium that I'm going to have to upgrade eventually to a larger tank. Currently I have a pleco, two cat fish, 5 clown loaches, 5 black ruby barbs, 4 platys, 1 RTS, and 4 dayglo tetras. I am looking to upgrade to at least a 65, which is what I can afford and the space I can afford. I do my water changes regularly and it should be enough room for all of the fish that I have now, even the loaches. I've heard all different types of recommendations for the loaches, up to 120 gallons, but I've seen just as many that say 65 is fine for them so long as they have shade, power heads and the occasional frozen blood worms.
So feel free to offer any advice. What I need to know is what kind of filtration system will work best for the 65 gallon. Also, is it so heavy that it's best in a furnished basement (I have a sump pump). Finally, do you notice a spike in your electric bills (I know, dumb question).
Outside of fish-dom I am a history teacher in a suburban town in Central New Jersey, and I will be starting my 12th year teaching. I am from North Jersey originally. I went to Rutgers College and the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University, graduating with a B.A. in History with a Minor in Sociology in 2000 and a Masters in Education in 2001. I am also very much into using Google Apps in the classroom and demonstrating to my students that I am a learner, too. I love the social studies and I try to convey that love for the discipline to my students. I love my job and the people I work with.
I am a big baseball fan and I root for the New York Mess...er..uh..I mean Mets. I am also a New Jersey Devils fan and I root for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. I'm a season ticket holder for Rutgers Football, and I admire the women's basketball program and C. Vivian Stringer immensely.
If I can be I love being outside doing something, and I also enjoy reading non-fiction.
I guess that's it. Again, any advice you can give...or sticky posts you can direct me to would be awesome. As soon as I get an online album up on my Google Plus account I'll share my humble tank community with all of you.
