im relatively new to fishkeeping. I inhereted an 80litre tank a couple of years ago with some very black water and a few "unknown" fish - mostly because people were putting food into the tank but it was too black to see what they were feeding.

After some TLC of mine and the use of a cheap book, i goot the tank reasonably clean. Discovered its inhabitants were:

3x Red tail sharks (9,8 and 6 inches)
1x albino rainbow shark
1x clown loach

I was so chuffed i could see them and they seemed lovely and happy i named them all.

After a few months i started experimenting with some new comers, so i got 4 red eye tetras. Nicknamed "the 4 amigos" they dart about and generally seem to get on each others nerves but seem happy enough.

after a few more months i got some neons and left it at that.

About a year later the tank suffered an outbreak of whitespot but i didnt know what i was looking at until it was too late. Sadly george (albino rainbow shark), zee (clown laoch) and one red eye died.

After a good spruce up of the tank unfortunately i squished another 2 red eyes and only had one left

That was my worst fishy disaster. i was simply distraught. cired for days. I LOVE my fish, but i felt that my inexperience killed them. i really did feel guilty.

So now im 2 more years experienced, and gladly have not had any disease outbreaked again. I now have a lovely new fully enclosed 130l tank, powerhead, 2xt5 tubes, airpump, living plants - the works. My current stocks are:

1x Original RTS (the smallest - babs. Bruno moved to a new home with a friend and muffin commited suicide after a unnoticed jump-out followed by a hoover related incident)
2x Baby leapord plecos (Mr Grumpy and Mr Jolly)
4x Japonica Shrimps (way cool little fellows - seem to eat 24/7)
2x baby albino rainbow sharks (called Mini george in honour of my original and bert!)
9x mixed neon / cardinal tetras
3x red-eyes (now called the 3 amigos)
2x Silvertips (humphry and bogart)
6x fancy tail guppies (3 blue 3 gold called collectively the "groupies")
2x unknown presumed tetras i got free in a bag of living plants -they got sucked in i think. they look like neons but are longer, have a silver stripe and look like they have their tounge poking out!. mostly brown colour bodies (anyone help me on indetification here?) called Free and B (get it?)
1x male siamese betta

it may seem like a lot of fish, but they seem happy enough and the tank is nice and stable. lots of room for swimming and stable water conditions.

is it bad to name them, especially as it seems i get too attached and feel very sad when they occasionally die

Anyway, if anyone has any feedback on my choices of fish, setup or anything useful i should know about any of my fish i would love to know. Also, if the consesus is i have too many / incompatible fish i have the option of moving them to a friends nearly empty tank, so no nastiness required. and lastly, Hello everybody! nice to be here!

hi and welcome .
are these fish listed in the 80litre aqaurium???

no, they are all in the 130l now and loving it. ( i think its a 130, could be wrong. its 3ft x 1.5ft x 2ft ish )

ok well i think your stocking needs adjusting a bit as you may come across a few problems!

1)get rid of leapord plecs as these will outgrow your tank as they get very big!
2) get rid of the 2 unknown tetras
3)get rid of either red eye tetras or silver tiped and increase the other one to have a shoal of 6 minimum.
you are much better to have 2 shoaling species as more than that in that size of tank is really too much, and 2 of any shoaling species will not be happy at all and will become very shy and prone to bullying and disease.
4)the siamese fighter shouldnt really be in a community tank i have heard of it done but usually problems happen soon, it will atack alot of your fish especially guppies and nip their tails. siamese fighters should really be ideally kept singly in species only tank.!

:good:

the leopard plecs will be rehomed when i need too, already accounted for that. The Siamese has been living with them for nearly a year and no frayed tails yet!. I cant get red of the 2 unknown tetras. they are cool! they seem to spend most of their time with the neons/cardinals and are rarely out of that group. the silver tipped seem fine, not much bullying yet but ive only had them a couple of weeks. inherited from a tank of a man who sadly died.

how quickly can i expect the plecs to grow? i have had them 3 months and they dont seem much bigger at all!

they will grow fairly quickly

you have to cut down with tetras.
there is too many species
tetras should be in a ahoal and you dont havy any species in a ahoal of six but you have 5 types of tetras. these wont be happy fish and will be scared without a shoal like previously said.
you should do something.

hello and :hi:

welcome to this site, you will find very many knowledgable people. As far as your tank stock (im not judging) but i am agreeing. good luck.

keep the neons / cardinals
get 3 more red eyes
re home the silvertips

and rehome the plecos as soon as they get to about 5 inches im thinking. good plan?

or would you guys go for silvertips over redeyes?
