How should you introduce fish to a new tank. (Loads of people say completely different things)

The best way (IMO):

1. Put the fish (including the water it came in) into a suitably sized receptacle, or even better, open the bag and keep it in there. If you can, float it in the top of your tank to maintain temperature.
2. Over a period of a couple of hours, put small amounts of your tank water in with the new fish, until it's about 50/50 LFS water & tank water.
3. Put the fish (including all the water) into a quarantine tank, observe it for a week.
4. If all is well, you can then move the fish to your main tank.

That's not to say that's what I always do (I'm really bad for not using a QT tank  ) but that's what I think should be done, ideally.

empty bag and contents into a bucket and over a period of 2 hours start a siphon using airline an allow 2 drops of water from the tank a second into the bucket do it until the bucket is full then net out and put them in the tank

i have been told from my local aquarium to leave the bag floating for approx 20mins then to gradually add your tank water over the course of 10mins then to release thm into the tank. This has always worked for me and i have only had one casualty and that was because it got its fin caught somehow.

If you are using QT for 1 week, you may as well not bother :shifty: It takes most things about a month to show up, so anything less than 4 weeks does nothing to prevent disease, but makes you complacent, as you now believe your QT tank has stopped any and all diseases getting in. Big mistake

For FW I float for 20mins then let them loose. If using QT, I fill the QT tank with tank water from the main tank and move across some mature filter media into the filter to be used in QT, and observe over the next 1-2 months :good: Once I'm 100% certain they have been healthy for 4 weeks, I move them to the main tank :good: For SW, I float for 20 mins, then add 1 cup of tank water every 5 mins untill the bag is full, then I let them loose :good:
