Used this last night because my tank was slightly cloudy.

Mixed it in 1/2 litre of water and distributed into the aquarium water.

Within a hour all my fish were laying on the bottom of the aquarium, gasping for breath. My 5 yellow tail acei's have died, and the others look like they are gonna follow.

I have moved all my fish to a hospital tank and did a complete 100% water change last night.

The main ingredient is a chemical called formaldehyde.

Looks like they have all been poisoned by a product which says it is harmless to all fish and plants on the box.

Can I do anything to make the fish recover, im gutted

Bump this, hope somebody has an answer

Formaldehyde is evil severe stuff that should be used with extreme caution. It is used in a couple of fish meds, i would just show the fish the ingredients list and when they see Formaldehyde it should scare them into getting better!!!!!

Why did you add this just because of cloudy water? Generally cloudy water is not a problem, it happens to all of us occasionally, it can be caused by many things but is very rarely damaging to the fish, a tell tale sign that it is dangerous is when the fish start to hang at the top of the tank or become sluggish and lethargic.

Formaldehyde can actually cloud the water more and is a major contributor to smog, it is used in explosives, glues and paints - seriously nasty stuff that i would stay away from unless i had no other choice.

Best thing you can do now is keep them as stress free as possible, increase aeration, reduce lighting, test all your water parametres regularly, stop feeding for 24-36 hours.

Ok advice taken, what about my 350 litre tank where I put the Filter Aid into, will this be still infected with the Formaldehyde?, i did 100% water change last night and cleaned the structured background, but I noticed it in the filter (reddish colour) was still there?

Formaldehyde won't infect your tank, it will infact kill most nasties - but it is a severe and intense treatment that takes its toll on the fish. I imagine that with a good clean and a 100% water change then most of it will be gone - i just hope you have a very mature filter that can cope with a big clean like this - your tank might undergo a mini cycle so keep a eye on water parametres and don't clean your filter until you have to, add fresh carbon to your filter to draw out any remaining Formaldehyde and other toxins and metals.

Thanks Jonny, I have got 12 Mbuna coming tomorrow aswell to make matters worse.

Would I be ok mixing my infected fish with the new ones or would you advise against this?

Honestly mate, what do you think? Keep them separate of course!

oh dear, i would deffinately advice you to wait. The last thing you want to do is add more fish to a tank on the edge - for want of a better expression. You have certainly got some beautiful fish though, but i would wait to mix them as not to lose any more than necessary.

Ok, im gonna have to put the 12 new Mbuna's in the big tank because I have no where to put them, which is a bit crap bought about £100's worth off Tropical Fish Finder

go to your lfs and ask if they have a spare tank to house them in. do everything you can to avoid putting them in your tank.

How will I know when my tank is ready for fish?

when your fish are healthy again and when your water parametres are perfect and stable.
