Searching Lake Ontario for tropical fish...No luck
My filter in my 29g is a piece of junk. I don't have much room in my tank, but from what I have read, internal filter which is based inside the tank, works better then one that is outside the tank. Aquaclear looks like a good filter, or the Trio. Any advice would be appreciated greatly:D

i prefer externals beacuse there outside the tank so doesnt spoil the look of it and have a larger media capacity

It depends on external filter. Hanging or canister? Canister has more room and you can put more filter-stuff inside it. Bacteria get better on external filter than internal, because usually internal filter pump water rapidly and their volume is so small. Internal filter are very good to filter trashes away.

Some basic information about bacteria that live inside your tank :) And something about filtrations.

I prefer external canisters because they are quiet efficient, and don't take up space in or around the top of the tank.

most people put external canister filter under the tank in a cabinet, it connected to the tank using tubing and sucks the water out, then it goes through the filter media and is pumped back to the tank, there maybe expensive than internals ones but ive had mine 10 years and its still as good as new, i have an eheim classic

Canister filters are expensive. If you are getting a larger tank, buy a canister filter that is suitable for a larger tank, and turn down the flow adjuster on it for now.
