Internal Filter?

Hi, I have an internal filter in my 68lt tank with Tetra's, cory's & bristlenoses and I am concerned after researching the needs of schooling fish that people are saying to use an external filter.
Does any one else have any input into this. I'm not sure why they are saying to have an exterior filter and not an internal one. I hope some one can answer this question.
