I just purchased an eheim 2210 for my 20 gallon as my current filter is crap. I was wondering how i can go about changing the filters round, i don't have any media in the current filter as ive been treating it with meds so i can't switch it over. Do you think the best thing to do is to set the eheim up along with the current one so that the bacteria develop in the eheim so when they develop i can then remove my old filter? I have a small red tail black shark and a banjo catfish in the tank. Thanks :/

Btw, are these aquaball filters any good?

if you dont have any media in the current filter, what use is it going to be to run it alongside the new one?

I meant it has the sponge but not the carbon media.

couldnt you just run the sponge in the new filter? :)

by running the 2 filters along side each other, you are hoping that the old filter's colonised bacteria will keep the tank cycled while the new filter's bacteria grows.

if the old filter does infact have colonised bacteria, i dont see why you cant just put the colonised media in the new one :)

I thought of taht but the problem is that my current filter has a small sponge "block" and the eheim has a roundish one with a hole in it! It just wouldn't fit :shout:

Take your old sponges out of the filter and squeeze the media onto the new ones to get them started, then put the old sponges back in your filter.

lol, I was thinking about that...as in squeezing the bacteria on/in to the new sponges. Will do, Thanks
