Intelligent Fish

Hi, I want to know if there are any intelligent fish that would go in a juwel 240.

I would like it to be able to have tankmates as well.

Thanks

I'm intelligent! :fun: I don't think I could fit in a tank that size though. :/ What about a 75gal?

Thanks,
Chris

Large cichlids are generaly viewed as being intelligent but, as I expect you know, could not realy be kept in that size tank with tankmates. However, I think (though I may be wrong) what you are after is not so much 'intelligent' species ('intelligence' being a rather difficult term to define) but fish with complex behaviours or that, perhaps, interact with you a little more than say your average tetra. Most cichldis qualify for this - but so do gouramies and, arguably, many cyprinids. If you are after interesting behaviours, predatory fish (regardless of size) are probably the way to go. Alternatively, tanganyikan shell-dwellers are very interesting fish. If you want interaction between the fish, territorial species such as mbuna cichlids and certain gouramies qualify but so do social fish such as cories and various other catfish. If what you want is a fish that'll come to you when you approach - most do. :) I know you probably had something like an oscar in mind but, actualy, oscars don't behave all that differently from smaller cichlids. It's just they tend to be kept alone or in small numbers so their owners pay closer attention to them and, being larger, the behaviour is more obvious - not to mention they often have territories that extend beyond the confines of their tank, causing them to react to outside activity more obviously.
