Installing Laterite

Just reading the laterite instructions its all straight forward but their is one bit that confuses me.

After putting the laterite iin and distrubutign it evenly over the base it says to add 1" off gravel on top then mix the gravel evenly through the laterite...

I dont get how it means to mix the laterite with the gravel when obviously the laterite is on the bottom this is surely impossible unless I try bring some of the laterite to the surface and mix it around?

I never understood this myself, the laterite gets all mixed up anywy as you move the plants around, so basically i wouldnt worry about it, just make sure you wash the laterite well its messy stuff in the tank if you dont, my laterite has been mixed with my gravel from day one, i dont see any advantage in having it layered or maybe im just missing something.

When I did it, I washed it (a lot) then chucked a bunch of sand in the container stirred it all together then dumped it in the tank. Then I added the rest of the sand on top of it all. Seemed a little odd to me as well, but I did it anyway.
