I'm pretty sure that's a juvenile Protomelas Spilonotus, probably a Tanzania. They are stunning fish as adults. :good:

Hey Demm

I had a look online in the normal cichlid information places and couldn't really find anything other than that it is spelt "insignis" and it is a member of the Haplochromis family. The picture on cichlid forum is of a juvenile male thus is was not much help with colouration. The lateral dark patches/blotches are the same but the colouration is different. So I took out the Ad konings bible of malawi cichlids (pg 147 and 150 for those that have it )and it had to say that the species is found all around the lake and the morphs and colouration are many and varied. Some have blue faced similar to yours and some are entirely blue but it does not mention yellow on the ventral side. Therefore this may not be your species.

The common name is : Haplochromos one and a half stripe
the scientific name is Protomelas insignis

Hope this helps.

Also of note: If it is insignis I hope you have a big enough tank as it will get to 20cm in length and is considered a wide bodied fish.

edit::::::::::::;
"Cilla Black" I think we have a match!

Just found this on www.malawimayhem.com. Looks like your fish as it has the yellow on the ventral side.

i think that looks like it might be it! the male Protomelas insignis looks exactly like it.

thanks alot for the help :)

so far it's a good fish and hope it doesnt cause problems for the others. hasnt yet. i have it in a 55gallon tank right now. probably in about 6 months i'll be getting a 120 hopefully, so i think tank space wise it should be ok.

thanks alot for the ID
