My large tank which I clean every Saturday always looks like the inside glass has a thin coating of dust on it. I wipe the glass each cleaning and it looks clear but the next day goes back to looking dusty. I do have sand in this tank but the filter intake isn't so close to the bottom that it sucks the sand up.
Also my filter floss is dirty every day. I change it daily and the following day it looks all brown again. It sure appears like it's covered in the same brown/orange wash off that you get when you clean sand. My water isn't that colour however. What could this be, any idea's?

Don't the bacteria that do the nitrogen cycle live in the filter floss?

Diatom algae by the sound of it.
how will I get rid of it?

I have sponge and ceramic rings in the filter as well that were transferred from an established tank that I had. I just add some filter floss after reading some where on this forum that it will help clean the water crystal clear, which is what I want.

Ah, good then.
As for the white dust thing, it only took me like... 2 days before my brand new tank got covered in that stuff (even though I've had a filter + fish running in an older one that experienced this before).
Should be gone within a week though, as my old tank only had it for a week as well. The fish love to graze on it.
I think it would be useless to wipe it off, it will keep coming back. Rather just wait till it fades away.
Though in this case it seems to take longer for a bigger tank.
