I will require a hefty ammount of insects + worms for my new 12 fish.

Can anyone advise on a cost effective method of obtaining large quantities of them, more as their regular diet than a 'treat' as found in most pet stores

Does anyone even cath their own?? I have a method for beetles but that averages at about 2 per night...and when its not snowing!!!

thanks

The safest and easiest way to obtain worms and insects (crickets and locusts etc) is to buy them from a pet store that has supplies for reptiles.

Like CFC said it would be safest to purchase them at pet stores.....Crickets cost next to nothing at pet stores and worms are pretty cheap too.....It's also a lot safer to purchase them then to catch your own though every now and then my ABF gets a wild cricket :)

One thing I learned while tending a bearded dragon is that the crickets (or other insects) tend to be starved and malnurished at the pet stores. This is important since you want to feed them as an exclusive diet. It's best to keep an insect tank and fatten them up first, otherwise you may essentially just be feeding your fish undigestable exoskeleton.

yeah ive found a place that plumps them up with calcium, then dehydrates them keeping the nutrients intact.

also a store that keeps them semi fresh in cans, so thats cool.

the fesh tins are from a well googled live insect shop and the others from a pet store i found online which offer better value - 250g bags for £4

i've found a bulk tropical fish food supplier also, so i will probably just mix the shimp etc. in with that.

there is another i have found that a re pre-mixed and contain 3 varieties of shrimp and a balanced flake food.

these also look nice http://www.geocities.com/lakesboys2003/tubifex.html

oh the variety...
