My new tank is double the height of my old one, so at the moment the inlet filter is about half way up the tank. Is it better to have it lower or do you think it will be ok like this?

I prefer lower, and I think it helps with good movement as opposed to drawing off from higher up. Its a simple fix, just buy another uplift pipe, trim 30mm off your existing tubing and form the join with that.

I'm with Damian.  The filter intake should be close to the substrate, somewhere between four and six inches above.  Some filters have extendible intake tubes (my Rena had four or five pieces that fit together to allow various lengths), and some filters have extended intake tubes you can buy.
