Just noticed that my female red platy is laying on her side at the top of the water trying to swim frantically with her pectoral fin that is on her side in the water. On inspection she appears to be missing the majority of her other pectoral fin and seems not to be able to swim because of it. I think she has been injured by my male red platy as he was swimming near her earlier while she seemed perfectly fine.

What can I do to help her?

i had this problem with one of my female platy's, she was missing a fin on one of her sides and the other fish picked on her big time, she died sadly. i recommend moving her into another tank or isolate hyour platy, hopefully she will survive, but from the soudns of it maybe not.

good luck!

I have a floating hatchery in there, but it has half a dozen baby platy who i am hoping to rehome in the next few weeks, do you think she will be ok in with them? I cant put them into the main tank as im trying to keep two others seperated in there (to keep myself)

If it cant swim it will be fine with them, but having a large fish in a hatchery for any length of time isnt good.
If the other fish are picking on her then move her yes.
Fins can grow back but im not sure if its completely gone...
The fish resting on the bottom isnt a good sign unfortunately, but if its still feeding its good.
Add some melafix if you have some, probably at half does if you dont want to risk your fry dying...not sure if melafix effects fry or not, check the label. It will stop and secondary infections and acts as a mild antiseptic.

Well, I got up this morning (5.45am) and she had died through the night, I thought she would as she certainly didnt look good.

Thanks for the help anyway

Nicola
