I went to the pet store yesterday to get a third gold dojo loach as a companion for my other two because I know they work best in groups and I'd like to try to breed them at some point in the future. The whole lot of dojos at the store looked pretty sorry except for one really fat and healthy looking one so I asked the employee to give me that one. I didn't notice until I got home, because of the distortion from the bag, that he gave me the wrong fish.
Here's the problem: This gold dojo loach has clearly had it's tail completely taken off at some point as there is a distinct line where I can tell that it is growing back and the rear fin is pretty shredded but looks like it might be healing. The poor fish also has a twisted dorsal fin and bruised barbels on it's face. The pectoral fins also appear a bit underdeveloped, even if it is a female, which I can't tell at this point. The fish is not at all active like my other dojos and just lays at the bottom of the tank. I'm not even sure if it is eating.
My question: Petsmart offers a guarantee on their fish, so I have the option of returning it within an allotted number of days, but I'm too nice and caring of a person so I'm wondering if there is ANYTHING that I can do for the fish and if there is any hope for it to ever be lively and healthy like my other dojos. I really don't want to lose another fish, especially after I finally fixed all of the previous problems in my tank.
Note: the fish was in ill condition when I bought it and it's health/condition has nothing to do with my tank parameters. All of my other fish are perfectly healthy and not pestering the injured dojo at all.
Oh, and I fed them some mineral/vitamin enhanced frozen Daphnia yesterday because I read somewhere that B12 helps heal fins.
I'd appreciate any ray of hope for this little guy/girl.
