HI

I bought some golden acaras yesterday on a whim. They are only tiny at the moment but I just wanted some info on them. I plan to quarantine them for 2 weeks but am not sure yet about putting them in my 4ft tank, which will containall the fish in my signature - all the quarantine fish will move into the 4ft if they remain healthy. Will the acaras be OK with the other fish? Also, would it be better to keep them separate until they grow a bit? At present they are only about an inch long.
So, how big will these fish grow, what do they tend to like to eat etc? Any advice would be great!

I'm presuming you mean Nannacara anomala, if so I wouldn't have thought there would be a problem introducing after they have been quaranteened, the guppies, neons and plec shouldn't bother them. The kribs may cause them some hassle, but in a 4ft tank it should be fine. You could always put them back into the quaranteen tank to grow on if you wish.

Brief profile on them.

Hmmm I am not 100% sure they are what I bought.. the shop had them down as golden acara, and as a dwarf cichlid. Mine look a little like tiny kribs actually, but not as yellow in colour, more a brownish yellow, and with a black stripe running down the length of their body. I'll try to get a pic of them later but they are quite timid at the moment and hiding in a cave!

I was thinking golden acara = gold edge rivulatus. If so they will kill everything in your tank. Any idea which fish it is? A picture or scientific name would be more helpful than a common name :)

Do they look like the fish on this page: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=147

You can see different pictures by the drop down box under the pictures.

If so I think you have Nannacara anomala

Is a little article on them.

Ah now I didn't see the drop down box! :p Yes, looking at some other pics, i think that is definitely them! So the common name is golden dwarf cichlid? I must change my signature! Thank you!

if they are Nannocara anomal they should be fine with the fish you have. But as shroob said, keep an eye on the kribs. They shouldn't cause any trouble but they might. It's unlikely considering the tank size.

Hopefully the kribs will be behaving themselves by the time the newbies go in! Both kribs are female, and one bullied the other in the 2ft. So i put the bullied krib in the 4ft for a week them moved the bully in yesterday. Now the bullied is the bully and is exacting her revenge! I'm a little concerned actually, if things get too bad then one of them will have to try their luck in one of the quarantines with my new fish :S - can kribs kill each other when fighting?

kribs can kill each other but it is very rare for them to do so. Normally just just bully each other and eventually one becomes a little weaker. The weaker fish is then more prone to illness from disease or poor water quality.

Here is a pic of one of my new cichlids - it's not a great pic cos the lighting in the quarantinre tank ain't great, but you can see him... I am sure he is a male anyway! And if so, the so is the other :S

kind of looks like a Pelvicachromis subocellatus but its likely to be another type of Nannocara sp.

Thanks Colin. I'll take more pics in a few weeks when they have grown a little, maybe they will be easier to identify then!
